GENERAL GUIDELINES
This course equips technical and Academic English students with the linguistic competence needed for effective communication in both oral and written technical and scientific contexts. The course content, including technical and scientific vocabulary and the functional and structural forms of the English language, is designed to provide students with the necessary tools to access and understand updated information in their fields.
This comprehensive course plan fosters active learning through synchronous and asynchronous sessions. These sessions, which encourage comments and interactions on forums and comment sections, are complemented by vocabulary workshops, translation techniques, and intercultural studies. Including grammatical structures and technical and scientific English further enhances the learning experience, promoting a holistic approach to language acquisition.
The different strategies and techniques will ease your work throughout the semester dynamic. Reading skills include skimming and scanning strategies to help you become a very effective reader. It is useful when searching for information on the web: technical and scientific documents, such as scientific reviews, instructional manuals, technical handbooks, books, magazines, and other high-tech details.
In this course, you will delve into functional grammar, equipping you with the language tools necessary for professional communication. This study mainly benefits those in health-related careers, providing a competitive edge in a rapidly evolving world. Your progress will be closely monitored through portfolio assessment, ensuring that classroom learning directly applies to real-world tasks and is tailored to your individual needs.
DIAGNOSTIC TEST
A diagnostic test determines students' knowledge of vocabulary, reading, grammar, writing, and translation skills developed in this course. The test is on Google Forms, and the student will get access from the Moodle Platform.
JUSTIFICATION
Training students in English language proficiency is one of the most meaningful characteristics for universities to perform the functions that society requires. Many students in Panamanian universities have shown the need to understand the English language to meet their professional area; however, many need the skills to communicate effectively in their study specialization. Although they are aware of this problem, many professions need technical English. Training students to master English for Specific Purposes demands new methods and procedures that allow stakeholders to reach the best oral and written communication skills created to succeed in work.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This study overviews the basic skills to comprehend technical and scientific textbooks. Medical terminology can look and sound complex, but breaking words down and valuing their roots, prefixes, and suffixes is crucial to prevent misinterpretations or errors.
This course is for 48 hours. The following are the topics of each module:
Module 1: Word Building

Module 3: Getting Ready to Read
Title: Academic and Scientific Readings

BASIC LEARNING STRUCTURE
The prior learning structure is a holistic process in which the learner incorporates physical, mental, emotional, and attitudinal aspects necessary to trigger learning. It includes the course's global competence specific to competencies, modules, titles, and assessments.
GLOBAL COMPETENCE
Analyze the formation of words with a scientific and holistic view and recognize how this cognitive process takes place in developing world-building skills such as selecting words, affixes recognition, multiple meanings, and words in a scientific context or text.
BASIC COMPETENCES
Identify efficiently the prefixes and suffixes added to medical terminologies and their role in changing meaning and parts of speech in different contexts.
Demonstrate with accuracy the word root or part root word in scientific terms from a text.
Classify scientific words regarding part of speech in technical reading.
Appreciate the role of a word regarding formation, selection, usage, and meaning in a scientific text.
ASSESSMENT AND REQUIEREMENTS
Attendance:
You will not receive a grade for this synchronous/asynchronous class if you have more than four unexcused absences, with excuses subject to strict review. Absent students must complete both in-class and homework one week after one week. The students are responsible for finding out from the professor or fellow students about lessons missed during absences. You can get the assignment if you know you will be absent in advance
EVALUATION
The final grade will depend upon grades received in an online class, home assignments, class participation, attendance, mid-term tests, and workshops.
